El fin de The L Word

El pasado domingo 8 de marzo, día internacional de la mujer, la cadena de cable Showtime transmitió el último episodio de “The L Word”, drama que retrata la vida y experiencias de un grupo de lesbianas en la ciudad de Los Ángeles.

Protagonizado por un grupo de actrices encabezado por Jennifer Beals (Flash Dance), TLW se mantuvo en el aire como el único programa con esa temática exclusiva y caracterizado además por presentar tramas controversiales que incluían gays, lesbianas, adopción en parejas del mismo sexo, identidad de género, cáncer de mama, y otros. Numerosas actrices pasaron por TLW como invitadas en esos cinco años aumentando la popularidad y aceptación de la serie. Marlee Matlin ganadora del Oscar por Children of a lesser God, Cybill Shepherd (The Last Picture Show, Moonlighting), Kristanna Loken (Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines), Rosanna Arquette (Pulp Fiction), Lolita Davidovitch (Intersection), Anne Archer (Fatal attraction), Melissa Leo (Frozen River), Annabella Sciorra (The Sopranos) entre otras desfilaron por el set de TLW haciendo delirar a los fan y aumentando la popularidad de la serie, mención especial para Lucy Lawless (Xena: Warrior Princess), icono de la comunidad lésbica cuya presentación en la serie fue malgastada en un minúsculo personaje.

Obteniendo buenas críticas en sus dos primeras temporadas TLW tropezó en la tercera temporada al presentar dos temas que la comunidad de fans rechazo enérgicamente. El primero fue el desenlace elegido al tema del cáncer de mama: la muerte de Dana Fairbanks (Erin Daniels) uno de los personajes más queridos de la serie. La respuesta de los fans fue tan negativa que la propia creadora de la serie: Ilene Chaiken comentó a Advocate.com:“…Si pudiera hacerlo todo de nuevo, eso es lo único que me gustaría hacer de manera diferente”… …”Creo que tal vez si hubiera sabido cómo iba a reaccionar la gente y cuanto iba a durar la ira y la desesperación, podría haberlo reconsiderado…”

El segundo tema fue el paseo del Tina Kennard (Laurel Holloman) por “heteroville”… Siendo una serie que trataba básicamente la temática lésbica, el hecho de que uno de sus personajes principales decidiera rechazar a su pareja y entablar una relación heterosexual constituyó un golpe bajo (y duro) para los fans que consideraron errado el reforzar estereotipos bisexuales negativos.

En la cuarta temporada TLW trató de enmendar las historias erróneas y en la quinta finalmente lo hizo, aunque no del todo satisfactoriamente, al reunir de nuevo a la pareja protagónica lo que fue ampliamente aceptado por los fans y les ganó una nueva temporada en Showtime, la sexta y final.

Habiendo presentado un piloto para un posible spinoff de la serie que transcurriría en la cárcel, los escritores plantearon la temporada final como un misterio a resolver presentando en el primer episodio la muerte de uno de sus personajes principales: Jenny Schecter, alter ego de Ilene Chaiken. El resto de los episodios de la temporada fueron escritos sobre la, poco sutil, base de incriminar a cada uno de los personajes regulares, para lo cual Jenny hizo lo que mejor supo hacer en toda la serie: irritar a cada una de las chicas (como Chaiken ha hecho con sus fans ).

La falta de ideas creativas y el exceso de temas tratados en las temporadas anteriores no mejoraron en esta última y la particular visión de Chaiken de molestar a sus televidentes (“Fallarás completamente si no tienes un montón de gente molesta y despotricando”, convirtieron el episodio final en una gran desilusión para sus fans que la misma noche de su transmisión comenzaron a expresar su molestia no sólo porque Chaiken no respondió a su tan cacareada publicidad: Who killed Jenny sino porque no “cerró” ninguna de las tramas principales.

Pero más allá de toda la controversia (tan esperada por la señora Chaiken) The L Word quedará en la historia de la TV como un icono para la comunidad LGBT en todo el mundo.
